Art at the Aviary

with Great West Institute


We are excited to announce Saturday Art Workshops for Kids this summer at the Aviary. In addition to our Avian Adventure Summer Camps, a variety of art activities will be offered on Saturdays at the Children's Art Park in the Aviary. Starting June 19th, classes are from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm and are $20 per session with a 15% discount for signing up for 5 or more sessions. (Class fee includes free admission to the 1:00 pm bird show.)

SCHEDULE

June 19th Sketchbook Making and Garden Weaving - Introduction to the Aviary exhibits and creation of sketchbooks, followed by a group weaving of grasses, fiber, cloth and feathers in the Art Park

June 26th Totem Wall and Flag Trail- We'll paint and decorate flags and totem sticks to make pathways and trails for kids throughout the Aviary.

July 10th Drawing and Painting Birds from Exhibits- We'll draw the Aviary's most exotic and colorful residents and then create watercolor paintings from our drawings.

July 17th - Blue Bird Houses- We'll make some backyard bluebird houses and then decorate them.

July 31st - Peacock Feathers and Group Mural- As a group, we'll create cutouts of peacocks and their spectacular feathers with paint and other materials, followed by the group painting of a mural to display at the Aviary.

August 7th - Floyd the Flamingo and Bird Masks- We'll learn all about Utah's famous Floyd the Flamingo, followed by a fabulous bird mask-making project.

August 14th - Bower Bird Nests and Eggs - Build an incredible Bower Bird nest making and then decorate the nest as if it belonged to a Bower Bird. We'll also learn about the many different types of eggs, creating and decorating some of our own out of modeling clay.

About Heidi Ferguson

After graduation from Alta High School Heidi Ferguson went on to the University of Utah to received a Bachelor in Fine Arts. Her emphasis was in drawing, painting and printmaking. While at the U she also learned silver smithing and ceramics. Since receiving her degree Heidi has been interested in hand made books and has spend time at Penland School of the Crafts and the Minnesota Center for the Books Arts learning how to make books. While living in Minnesota, Heidi's love of bird watching grew. She is a former President of the Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter. She currently teaches bird watching classes through Salt Lake Community Ed. She also teaches young people art through the Salt Lake City Youth City Artways program.
