Southern Ground Hornbills
Tracy Aviary’s family group of five Southern Ground Hornbills were introduced to a new $220,000 exhibit on March 25, 2010. The netted exhibit allows hornbills to make better use of vertical space without the need for flight restriction. It features a variety of substrates and furnishings that allow the birds to demonstrate natural behaviors, and the landscape resembles that found in southern Africa. A new holding structure divides into three separate areas, one with separate outdoor holding that allows keepers more options for managing the birds as well as increased holding during the winter.
The Southern Ground Hornbill exhibit was the first of several projects to be completed during 2010. Three others are our Discovery Garden, a Red-legged Seriema exhibit and our indoor-outdoor South American Pavilion.
