AVES
Place-based Education Project
(Avian Ecology in Schools)
Field Testing September 2007 and May 2008
Tracy Aviary is field testing its innovative new AVES curriculum with 25 4th and 5th grade classrooms in Salt Lake City School District. Our strategy? Integrating the allure of birds with USOE
standards. We employ proven strategies that maximize an interdisciplinary approach to place-based learning, incorporating classroom visits, Aviary Outdoor Classroom field trips, live bird presentations, a student activity guide and complete lesson plans and support materials.

Why Birds?
Life stimulates learning. And there are no living beings as ever-present, diverse, colorful and intriguing as birds. Their migration signals the cyclic turn of seasons and links us to faraway lands. Their physical features proclaim to us the intimate connections between form and function, habits and habitats. Their readily observable behaviors remind us of the myriad ways that life acts and interacts. Because they link us to so much of our shared universe, the study of birds opens windows to understanding about entire landscapes and our own roles within them.
Our Education Mission
The Tracy Aviary Education Department integrates the allure of birds with best practices in education to inspire youth and adults to understand, appreciate and sustain our environment.
