Birding By Ear Workshops
Ever wondered what that bird is singing outside your window? Come and join us for our “Birding by Ear” workshops; an interactive setting in which learning and fun are combined to develop auditory skills to identify common Utah birds by ear. There is more than just the songs! We will learn what they are used for in the avian language, how songs are produced, and more.
The workshops will take place at Tracy Aviary, and will include indoor outdoor components. We will first review some material in Tracy Aviary’s space, and later we will have the chance to go outside and practice in Liberty Park or City Creek!
These workshops are designed to develop skills to recognize birds by ear. Birding by Ear I will cover basics of why and how birds sing, tips to recognize them, and the songs of the most common birds that reside in Utah year-round. Birding by Ear II will include learning about the songs of common summer residents that come from the tropics of Central and South America and Mexico.

Opportunities for further practice: Want to continue practicing your skills? Tracy Aviary leads a volunteer Citizen Science Project in City Creek Canyon, and bird walks in Liberty Park. Since 2011, several volunteers count birds in City Creek during the breeding season. Interested in learning more about these opportunities? Please email CarolinaR@tracyaviary.org. Keep in mind however, that is by no means an obligation or requirement for the workshop, rather, just a good chance to get out and learn more about the birds and habitats in your community.

FOR NON-MEMBER AND MEMBER REGISTRATION: To register and process payment, please fill out our Birding by Ear Registration Form. Please note, if you are a member and do not enroll with the MEMBER price option, you will not receive your membership discount. Memberships will be verified.
- Registration fees include snacks, and all other materials needed for the workshop.
- If you would like to bring binoculars, you are welcome to bring a pair with you.
- Space is limited to 12 participants per workshop.
Cancellation Policy
A 80% refund will be given for cancellations made at least one week before the workshop date. Cancellations made less than one week prior to workshop will not be refunded.
